Building a Unit Plan
By: Foghladha
When building a unit plan, you must consider what will be required of you on the battlefield.
Most players come into the game thinking, "I want to just play ranged and help from afar. " The reality of the situation is that ranged units can't contest objectives. At the end of every match, it comes down to putting units and heroes on the capture point. If there are no melee units, you don't stand a chance of securing it.
One common mistake is having archers shoot at shield units. The Spear Sergeants, in particular, are healed every time they block a projectile. Thus, having enemy archers shoot at them helps them to win as they are healing the unit instead of hurting it.
If you only have ranged, you're building to lose. Ranged units are a niche and can be used in a few limited situations.
The Foundational Build
There are 4 units I encourage every new player to work towards.
-
Spear Sergeants - Offensive Shield Unit. When mastered, gain healing from blocked arrows. Great for pairing with Imperial Spear Guards or Symmachean Stalwarts.
-
Imperial Spear Guards - Defensive & Disruption Shield. When mastered, it gains the ability to disable enemy units temporarily. Rotating between formation and cover commander perpetually provides added defense ability.
-
Symmachean Stalwarts - Pike Shield Hybrid. Using block formation and brace on a 3-second rotation paints the floor in death. Can quickly rotate by hitting the formation button and bracing while pointing your camera in the direction you want them to face. It can be controlled remotely using this technique.
-
Imperial Pike Guards - Unit Disruption & Anti-Cavalry. This unit can slow walk with its pikes in a direction, knocking units to the ground, giving shock troops a chance to clean up. While walking, they can kill most Cavalry instantly.
These 4 units will be the core of any Deathball and will make you viable in territory wars quickly after starting the game. They are also available from the unit tree. They will give you a good footing to build from.
From this starting place, you can now focus on beginning to unlock some ranged and cavalry units. Do note, it is not advisable for new players to start playing Cavalry before they have crossed the 1 million bronze line. Cavalry is the most expensive bronze sink in the game, and starting them too soon will ensure you never have any bronze, which stunts your growth potential.
The most crucial part of your plan is focus. Wait until you have maxed your unit before moving on to the next.
